If you are planning a trip and want to see all the sites, or you are not a big fan of the party, it is unlikely that TYW will tick all your boxes. During the course of The Yacht Week, there are three theme nights. Retro Tropical, Riviera and Regatta Day. The latter was by far one of my favorites.
All ships sail together as each crew shows off their costumes in an attempt to win the best theme. My boat waited until the last minute and ended up going with “Bae Watch”, but unfortunately we weren't the only ones. The boats that stood out were those of the Jazzercise crew, with spandex from head to toe in all the colors of illuminators you can think of while doing a synchronized training routine, the one with the inflatable T-Rex costumes, or the one with the bare ass and kitchen aprons. Think a little about it, it's a real riot.
Yacht Week is known to be a little disorganized. It's all part of the fun and madness of the trip, but when the crew drinks as much as the guests, you can't always count on things going exactly as scheduled. Patience is your best friend here, and a glass of wine always seems to help too. At The Yacht Week parties you usually get one or two free drinks with your wristband, but then you have to pay for your drinks.
With Yacht Week Croatia, you can choose the size of the boat you want (there's a joke), but you still pay for the brand. Some rooms in the monohauls and catamarans offered by Yacht Week are larger than others, but the small rooms are small for two people. If you can't wait to get to The Yacht Week and have fun all week and your friend is looking for a quiet and relaxing week of sailing and sightseeing, it's not going to work. Take a bunch of (mostly) twentysomethings, put them on a yacht in the middle of the most beautiful places in the world (Greece, Thailand, Croatia, British Virgin Islands, etc.), offer professional photographers, planned parties and lots of alcohol and there you have a foolproof recipe for the best week of your life.
The two times I have done the Croatia route, I have sailed from different marinas, so it is better to wait for your arrival document to get information on where you are closest to your marina to buy. It's rare for me to go on vacation with friends nowadays, but the stars aligned and four girls (very busy and difficult to plan) from all over the United States gathered for Yacht Week Croatia, sailing from Dubrovnik to Split across the dazzling Adriatic Sea. There are now four types of yachts you can book with The Yacht Week: Economy, Standard, Premium and Premium Plus. If you don't have a group of friends big enough to fill your boat, The Yacht Week's Crew Finder is the best resource to gather a crew.
But before committing to your first trip with the travel company, it's best to know exactly what you're getting into, because we all have different styles of travel and Yacht Week is definitely not for everyone. For simplicity, I have again compared apples to apples and I have taken the first week of August (from 6 to 13) for the Original Route (TYW) and the Party Route (SWC) and bet them side by side. Yacht Week may seem like a convention of those people, and whether you can handle a full week of partying practically non-stop is something you can determine for yourself. So you've decided to get a group of friends together or (if you're really feeling adventurous) book a cabin with a boat full of strangers for The Yacht Week Croatia.
I unknowingly contacted a skipper of the yacht week who went ahead with a glorious golden-winged swan for free. If you're looking for remote island shenanigans with the soundtrack of some of the best underground DJs in the world, The Yacht Week is a solid choice. .
