What is a yacht called?

Nowadays there are two types of yachts, sailing yachts and motor yachts. In terms of size, yachts tend to be anywhere from 10 m long to hundreds of feet. If you have a luxury boat less than 12 meters in length, it is usually called a cabin cruiser, sometimes simply a cruise ship. A superyacht is usually more than 24 m long.

A yacht is first defined as a sailboat, a motor yacht or a gulet yacht, and then as a sports or luxury yacht. Many yachting enthusiasts use the words boat and yacht interchangeably when in reality they are very different terms. A yacht is a larger boat or recreational boat. The word “yacht” comes from Dutch origin and was originally defined as a light and fast sailing ship used by the Dutch navy to find and capture pirates.

A boat, on the other hand, is smaller and can be anything from a fishing boat to a sailboat. One interesting thing to note is that outside of the United States, a yacht refers to a sailboat, and a motorized yacht is called a “motor yacht”. So far, we've been talking about how boats, boats and yachts mean different things in English, but that doesn't necessarily apply to other languages. Interestingly, in Dutch (which is the origin of the term), a yacht refers to any boat, regardless of whether it is a superyacht or a cheap rowing boat.

It is in English where words have different lines between them. While sailing for fun can be traced back to Ancient Egypt and possibly even beyond, the word yacht comes from the Dutch “jachtschip”, which means hunting boat.
